The National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition (NLPR), affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Automation (CASIA), Beijing, China, was founded in 1987 to become one of the first state key laboratories (SKLs) in China. The mission of the NLPR is to conduct cutting-edge research in the broad area of pattern recognition, to develop key technologies, and to train postgraduate students. The NLPR receives regular funds and bids projects from various departments of the Chinese government, primarily, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).

In 2008, the MoST opened an SKL Special Fund to promote the research and academic exchange activities. Supported by this fund, the NLPR launches a new Overseas Visiting Fellowship Program. The aim of this program is to attract and support outstanding international scholars to visit NLPR so as to strengthen scientific collaboration and promote culture communication among excellent international scholars and the researchers in NLPR.

We look for outstanding international scholars for applying the NLPR Overseas Visiting Fellowship in one of three types: Visiting Professor, Visiting Scholar, and Visiting Student.

1.Visiting Professor (2-3 persons/year)

Qualification

(1) Internationally recognized as an outstanding researcher in the related field. (2) Currently taking a full professorship (or an equivalent rank) in international universities or research organizations.

1-2 weeks

Budget

Transportation (flight in economic class), accommodation, and living cost will be fully supported by NLPR during the visiting period.

2.Visiting Scholar (5 persons/year)

Qualification

(1) Holding a PhD degree. (2) Taking a research or faculty position in international universities or research organizations.

Visiting Period:

1~3 months (accomplished within one year). The duty could be taken by two-time if the period is over 2 months.

(1) Transportation (flight in economic class), accommodation, and living cost will be supported by NLPR during the visiting period.

(2) NLPR provides each visiting scholar with 5000RMB/month for living cost on average.

Copyright Issue

     NLPR and the affiliated university (organization) jointly hold the copyright, if any research output is achieved during the visiting period.

3.Visiting Student (5 persons/year)

Qualification

(1) Currently being a research graduate student in international universities or research organizations. (2) Having solid background and research experiences in pattern recognition or related fields. (3) A recommendation letter from the supervisor is required.

Visiting Period

No shorter than 2 months

Budget

(1)   Transportation (flight in economic class), accommodation, and living cost will be supported by NLPR during the visiting period.

(2)   NLPR provides each visiting student with 2500RMB/month for living cost on average.

(3)   The total budget should not surpass 30K RMB for each student.

How to Apply

(1)    Visiting professors will be invited personally by the NLPR. Those who are interested in Visiting Professor may also contact the NLPR leaders. Candidates of Visiting Scholar should fill in the form "NLPR Visiting Fellowship Application Form.doc", while candidates of Visiting Student should fill in "NLPR Visiting Studentship Application Form.doc".

(2)    Prior to application, potential visiting students are suggested to contact the corresponding professor in NLPR to reach an agreement on research topic and visiting period.

(3)    Applications for visiting scholars should be sent to NLPR by October 31. Applications for visiting students should be sent to NLPR by May 31 for summer application, and November 30 for winter application.
